ENIGMA Principal Investigator Jizhong Joe Zhou received the prestigious ISME-IWA BioCluster Grand Prize Award 2022. The ENIGMA-supported research related to groundwater microbiomes as well as ecological theories (e.g. stochastic processes) constitute the main body of work considered for this grand Prize. This prestigious prize rewards interdisciplinary research of outstanding merit, recognizing the importance and impact of his interdisciplinary research at the interface of microbial ecology and water/wastewater treatment.

The ISME-IWA BioCluster Award, consisting of a personal diploma, a trophy, and a cash award (500€), was presented to him at the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition 2022 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was invited to give an award lecture during this congress in the BioCluster session (Tuesday, September 13, 2022). Additionally, he was announced as award winner in the opening presentation of the 18th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology at the conference in Lausanne, Switzerland.
