Congratulations to our ENIGMA undergraduate researchers Lia Grace Shamir, Haaziq Kazi, Rohan Samir Panchal, Fion Wu, and Annie Gao, who presented at the Data Discovery Symposium at the Hearst Memorial Mining Building on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
During the poster session, the group presented to Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) 198 students and mentors. Their work focused on creating an app to explore and integrate over a decade’s worth of ENIGMA data, ranging from sampling well geospatial information, microbial field communities with paired geochemical datasets, laboratory grown microbial communities with growth conditions, and an isolate collection. The app, currently in a beta development version, also offers a simple method for flagging microbial strains that meet user-supplied criteria. This project marked the first time mentors, Jennifer Kuehl and Shekhar Mishra worked with a team of data science students on the product design and implementation of an application to integrate and enable data exploration. Both the mentors and the students gained a deeper appreciation for how data and team organization impact the development of user-friendly apps with features that enable scientific discoveries.
