The BioEnergy Science Center (BESC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a postdoc to support the BioEnergy Science Center’s work in microbiology, functional genomics and transcriptomics related to biofuels research. BESC is a multi-institutional (18 partner), multidisciplinary research (biological, chemical, physical and computational sciences, mathematics and engineering) organization focused on engineering microorganisms for biomass deconstruction and fermentation.
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with teams using genetic manipulation, physiological characterization, systems biology techniques, and analytical chemistry to understand and improve microbial fuel and chemical production. The candidate will have the opportunity to apply state-of-the-art cultivation and next-generation sequencing technologies to characterize Clostridium thermocellum and Caldicellulosiruptor bescii physiology. Areas of study will include gene regulation associated with overcoming biomass inhibitors and for gains in strain productivity. This person will be expected to design and execute laboratory experiments, analyze quantitative data, write and communicate results to the scientific community.
